Abstract

In the history of prophets, a significant name is that of the Prophets of Bani Israel, in which Allah Almighty sent thousands of prophets. The name of this family is derived from the title of the first prophet of this lineage, Prophet Yaqub (Jacob) (peace be upon him), whose title was «Israel,» meaning «Servant of Allah.» Allah sent many well-known prophets from this family and also revealed the first three famous heavenly scriptures within this lineage. In Islamic history, this family holds a unique status, possessing its own distinct culture and laws. The traditions narrating the culture of Bani Israel are referred to in the science of Hadith as «Isra›iliyat.» These traditions contain a wide variety of information, including the laws, dealings, worship, and culture of Bani Israel. Unlike the books of Hadith, the commentators of the Qur›an (mufassirin) often used these traditions as sources, since the Qur›an mentions the events and conditions of the Prophets of Bani Israel, as well as the nation of Israel, sometimes in summary and sometimes in detail. To elaborate on the briefly mentioned events, these traditions were used, which were well-known among the people of Israel and have been compiled as sources in the books of Tafsir. After studying some of these sources, they are divided based on their authenticity, and a critical review is presented regarding the rulings drawn from them and the narrators of these sources.
